Overview

Johnson & Johnson

For J&J's University Case Competition, my six-person team developed a market entry strategy across R&D, pricing, marketing, supply chain, and hiring.

I focused on growth strategy and risk, pressure-testing our decisions against what could go wrong.

Strategy

Buy speed, build differentiation.

Our strategy paired purchased IP for faster market entry with internal R&D for longer-term differentiation, supported by decisions across pricing, marketing, manufacturing, and hiring.

Executive summary: context, business decisions, justification, risk
Investment strategy: develop internally or purchase the IP
Marketing strategy: why silver-tier, and why not gold

My Contribution

Pressure-testing the plan against what could go wrong.

I mapped 8 major risks across regulatory approval, R&D, manufacturing, competition, adoption, IP, pricing, and hiring, then prioritized them by likelihood and impact.

For the highest-priority risks, I developed mitigations including earlier FDA planning, R&D checkpoints, and phased hiring alongside plant expansion.

Mitigations for the highest-priority risks

Outcome

First place among twelve teams.

We presented and defended our recommendation to senior management judges and placed 1st among 12 USC teams.

Lessons

What I learned.

This case taught me to think in tradeoffs, and it changed how I think about business decisions.

I learned to look beyond individual decisions and ask how product, pricing, marketing, operations, people, and risk work together over time.
